It is widely studied that omega-3 fatty acids can improve our cardiovascular health. Camelina oil is a rich source of ω-3 α-linolenic acid (ALA). However, a recent RCT showed that an ALA supplement with camelina oil did not improve vascular function but adversely affected glucose metabolism in hypertensive patients with metabolic syndrome.   • Hi Xunhan, this was a really interesting read, as I hadn't heard about camelina oil before. In contrast to the present study, a Finnish study in 2018 found that camelina oil supplementation for 12 weeks had no significant differences in glucose metabolism or low-grade inflammation between groups. I did a little bit of further reading and found that a few studies have shown a beneficial effect of camelina oil on blood lipids. One study reported that serum LDL cholesterol concentration decreased significantly by 12.2% after a 6-week intervention period. Another, more recent study also found a significant reduction in LDL in postmenopausal women with dyslipidaemia. In general, more large, randomised, controlled clinical trials are needed before camelina oil supplementation is recommended for CVD prevention.
